While most of the attention around Post-War women artists like Lee Krasner and Perle Fine focuses other painting – especially Abstract Expressionism – many of them also explored printmaking, particularly as the medium became more accessible in the 1950s and 60s thanks to print workshops like Tamarind Lithography Workshop and Universal Limited Art Editions (ELAE).

Overview of what the following  artists dabbled in:

Lee Krasner

  • Lithographs: In the 1960s and 70s, Krasner began working with ULAE and created a number of lithographs. These maintained her bold gestural language and fragmented forms – very much an extension of her paintings.
  • Her prints often used collage aesthetics, similar to her work during her “Little Image” period and later collage series.

Perle Fine

  • Less is documented about Perle Fine’s printmaking specifically, as she is more known for her work in painting and collage.
  • However, given her connections and experimentation with abstraction, it’s quite likely she tried her hand at print techniques that allowed for strong compositional control, such as intaglio or screen printing, especially as she moved into more structured geometric abstraction in the 1960s.
  • Unfortunately, her print output is not as well archived, but she was part of the New York  School, many of whom participated in printmaking as part of their broader artistic practice.

In General – Postwar Women Artists & Prints

Many of he women associated with Abstract Expressionism explored:

Lithography – a popular for its painterly and gestural potential.

Etching and aquatint – used for subtle tonal variations and fine line work.

Screenprinting – especially in the 60s and 70s, as it became more accessible and linked with design and modernism.

Monotype – for those interested in one-of-a-kind images, closely tied to painting (you’d love this given your work!).

Course:

Session 1: Lee Krasner (1908-1984): Fragment & Flow (trace monotype + collage)

Session 2: Perle Fine (1905-1988): Order & Intuition (geometric overlays + monotype)

Session 3: Louise Nevelson (1899-1988): Texture & Mystery (collagraphs)

Session 4: Hedda Sterne (1910-2011): Motion & Transformation (faux drypoint)

As there’s a lot to unpack in this course we will be undoubtedly look at several other women of the group.
